Spicy Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

½ onion, diced

1 bell pepper (red or green)

Butter/margarine

Garlic powder to taste

Cayenne pepper to taste

Other desired meat seasonings (optional)

1 lb. ground beef, turkey or equivalent prepared TVP

Approx ½ cup ketchup

Approx ½ cup barbecue sauce

2 Tbs. grated parmesan cheese

6 hamburger buns, browned

Directions:

Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Dice half an onion and a bell pepper (green or red) and add to skillet with some butter or margarine. Season with garlic, cayenne or other desired spices. When vegetables begin to tenderize, add either 1 lb. ground beef/turkey or the equivalent of prepared TVP. Increase heat and stir often until meat is browned thoroughly and evenly. Drain if necessary. With spoon, mound meat into the center of the skillet and use back of spoon to press two equal indentations into the mound. Fill one “crater” with ketchup and the other with barbecue sauce.

Stir and let simmer 3-5 minutes. Once meat is evenly coated with both sauces, shake approximately 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese over meat and stir until cheese is no longer visible. Remove from heat and serve on browned, lightly buttered hamburger buns with cheese, pickles, chow-chow or mustard.
